KTM as a company was founded in 1934 by an engineer (Mathew Burke in Mattighofen) as a metal workshop. By 1953 KTM started to Manufacturer motorcycles. At this point KTM produced almost all components for their motorcycles in-house. Throughout KTM's history, they have been on the leading edge of motorcycle technology with the introduction of the first liquid cooled four-stroke motorcycle engine for off road use. In 1986 KTM was still in front of most Motorcycle Manufacturers introducing both front and rear disc brakes and in 1998 linkless rear suspension.
